Jul 8, 2020 · Molokai continues to maintain its Old Hawaii sensibility. While Western contact for the other major islands began in 1778 with the arrival of Captain James Cook’s fleet on the shores of Kauai’s Waimea, Molokai was left largely untouched until Captain Dixon sailed in eight years later.
The island is known under several names by the local population: Molokaʻi ʻĀina Momona (land of abundance), Molokaʻi Pule Oʻo (powerful prayer), and Molokaʻi Nui A Hina (of the goddess Hina).
When chiefs from the neighboring islands were called in to help settle the conflicts, Molokai fell under the control of Oahu. When the king of Maui was able to conquer Oahu, Molokai also came under the rule of the Maui king.

Hawaiian chief Kamehameha I invaded in 1795 and subordinated the population as part of his effort to unify the Hawaiian Islands.

One and a half million years ago, give or take a day, two large volcanoes pushed through the surface of the Pacific Ocean and created the island of Molokai. Kamakou in the east, and Maunaloa in the west. Somewhat later a third and much smaller caldera, Kauhako, popped up to form the Makanalua peninsula on the north side.
