Discussion. As a HP fan and lover of etymology, I thought I’d combine my two interests and share with you the origins and meanings behind some of the characters’ names! Harry Potter “Harry” is a Middle English diminutive of the name “Henry” which means ruler, a possible nod to his role as leader of Dumbledore’s Army.
