John Thomson (28 January 1909 – 5 September 1931) was a Scottish footballer who played as a goalkeeper for Celtic and the Scotland national football team. He died as a result of an accidental collision with Rangers player Sam English during an Old Firm match at Ibrox .

1908 — 1931. John Thomson had already established himself as Scotland’s number 1 when tragedy struck on 5th September 1931. Swift, agile and graceful Thomson was considered a brilliant goalkeeper having overtaken Jack Harkness at international level. He made his Celtic debut in a match against Dundee in 1927 at just 18 years of age.

Aug 4, 2023 · A football pitch at the Bowhill Centre is now named after the Celtic legend, a children's football tournament takes place there every year while a new venture, the John Thomson Football Academy, launched in June.
