Edwin Earl Catmull (born March 31, 1945) is an American computer scientist and animator who served as the co-founder of Pixar and the President of Walt Disney Animation Studios. [3] [4] [5] He has been honored for his contributions to 3D computer graphics, including the 2019 ACM Turing Award.
In high school Catmull wanted to work as an animator, but realizing that there were no educational paths to a career in animation in the United States at that time, he pivoted to work in physics and computer science, receiving two Bachelor’s of Science degrees in 1969 from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.
Sep 16, 2024 · Animation fascinated him, but there was no college for it. So when he started his Bachelor’s degree at University of Utah, he fell back on science. “There were no tools for it, for animation, so I switched over into physics when I went to college,” Catmull said.
In the 1950s, young Ed Catmull loved Walt Disney animated films such as Pinocchio and Peter Pan. He dreamed of becoming an animator, and he filled up sketchbooks and created his own flipbooks. At Salt Lake City’s Granite High School in the 1960s, he took every art class he could.

Previously, Dr. Catmull was vice president of the Computer Division of Lucasfilm Ltd., where he managed development in the areas of computer graphics, video editing, video games and digital audio.
