Oct 17, 2024 · Dr. Catmull founded three of the leading centers of computer graphics research - the computer graphics laboratory at the New York Institute of Technology, the computer division of Lucasfilm Ltd. and Pixar Animation Studios.
Under Catmull's leadership, Pixar developed the RenderMan proprietary photorealistic 3D rendering software that facilitates communication between 3D modeling and animation applications and the render engine that generates the final high-quality images.
Catmull ran the Computer Graphics Lab for Schure, but he eventually realized that the Long Island enterprise lacked the technical expertise to make a credible animated film. In 1979, Catmull moved west to take a job with Lucasfilm Ltd. in northern California.
Ed Catmull has been at the forefront of the digital revolution since its early days. The president of Pixar and Disney Animation Studios began studying computer science at the University of Utah in 1965. In 1972, he created a four-minute film of computer-generated animation that represented the state of the art at the time.
