Early in his life, Catmull found inspiration in Disney movies, including Peter Pan and Pinocchio, and wanted to be an animator; however, after finishing high school, he had no idea how to get there as there were no animation schools around that time.
He created an animated version of his own hand, for example, that was seen in the 1976 sci–fi thriller Futureworld. The University of Utah was a hotbed of innovation in the field at the time, and its reputation landed Catmull and some other newly minted Ph.D.s jobs with the New York Institute of Technology in 1975.
Catmull: Well, it was crossing my mind. At the time, I wanted to be an animator and an artist. But, I took chemistry and physics and math and I did fairly well on those. Although, because of my schedule I had to learn algebra on my own through the university home study program. So, I took advanced algebra there.
In 1971, as part of a course in computer graphics taught by Ivan Sutherland, Catmull created and animated a model of his left hand in what is considered one of the earliest examples of 3D shaded computer animation, leading to Catmull’s first academic publication in the Proceedings of the ACM annual conference.
