Beamish Museum is the first regional open-air museum, in England, [2] located at Beamish, near the town of Stanley, in County Durham, England. Beamish pioneered the concept of a living museum. [ 3 ] By displaying duplicates or replaceable items, it was also an early example of the now commonplace practice of museums allowing visitors to touch objects.
Beamish began as the vision of Dr Frank Atkinson, today it is one of the best Open Air Museums in the World! Beamish was the vision of Dr Frank Atkinson, the Museum’s founder and first director. Frank had visited Scandinavian folk museums in the early 1950s and was inspired to create an open air museum for the North East.
