Lake Suwa is 759m above sea level and is the 24th largest lake in Japan with a circumference of just under 16km. Suwa Lake is close to the historic, Edo Period Nakasendo Highway and is easily accessible by car from Narai, Kiso-Fukushima in the Kiso Valley, Kofu and Kamikochi. Lake Suwa is a 10 mins walk from the JR station. It is essentially an onsen town. We took a walk by the Lake and spotted the Lake Suwa-ko Geyser Center where you can enjoy the sight of a dynamic geyser and the "Nanatsu-gama," or the spot where seven hot springs gush. (check out the video).

Lake Suwa is the site of a natural phenomenon known as the "God's Crossing" (御神渡り, o-miwatari), large cracks that form in the winter across the surface of the frozen lake. A vertical temperature gradient results in ice pressure ridges forming in the surface ice, reaching heights of 30 centimetres (1 ft) or more. [1] Omiwatari in 2018.

Suwa-taisha Shrine is one of Japan's oldest shrines and host to the famous Onbashira pillar riding festival which runs once every six years. The shrine has four locations on opposite sides of the lake. Takashima Castle in Kamisuwa Onsen was known as the "floating castle" back in the 16th century when the lake came right up to the ramparts.
