Lake Suwa is 759m above sea level and is the 24th largest lake in Japan with a circumference of just under 16km. Hotels and onsen facilities dot the shoreline and many offer uninterrupted views of the lake and surrounding mountains. Foot baths around town offer convenient stops to rest and recuperate.
Lake Suwa occupies the center of the Suwa region and there is plenty to do along its shores. A cycling and jogging path runs 16 kilometers around the lake, and bike rentals are available outside Suwa area stations and lakeside near Hotel Beniya.

- Takashima Castle. Take some extra time to visit a few other interesting places in the Lake Suwa area. A good place to start is Takashima Castle, located in a park complete with a pond and full of cherry trees in the spring.
- Suwa City Museum. For more history about the area and the lake, you can visit the Suwa City Museum. It details the many fascinating legends of Lake Suwa, like Kappa--a legendary creature that is said to be half frog and half turtle.

Lake Suwa is a 10 mins walk from the JR station. It is essentially an onsen town. We took a walk by the Lake and spotted the Lake Suwa-ko Geyser Center where you can enjoy the sight of a dynamic geyser and the "Nanatsu-gama," or the spot where seven hot springs gush. (check out the video).
