Magma, or molten rock, is lighter in weight than the solid rock around it. Because of this, it tends to rise to the surface.
Ask pupils how they think a mountain gets its ‘mountain shape’. Explain that erosion (the continual wearing away of rock by rain, ice and wind over time) changes the shape of rocks and land.
