What are the general principles of care for children and young people with depression? All healthcare professionals involved in the assessment or treatment of a child (aged 5–11 years) or young person (aged 12–18 years) with depression should:
Psychological interventions for children (5–11 years) and young people (12–18 years) with mild depression should be provided by therapists who are also trained in child and adolescent mental health, in settings such as schools and colleges, primary care, social services, and the voluntary sector.
Children and young people presenting with moderate to severe depression should be reviewed by a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) team. Management includes psychological intervention with or without antidepressant treatment.
