The Afsluitdijk (Dutch: [ˈɑfslœydɛik] ⓘ; West Frisian: Ofslútdyk [ˈɔfslyːdik]; "closure dyke" [ a ]) is a major dam and causeway in the Netherlands.
The Afsluitdijk, a 32-kilometer-long water barrier between North Holland and Friesland, has acted as a physical barrier for 90 years, separating IJsselmeer from Wadden Sea. This imposing dike plays a vital role in protecting the Netherlands from flooding.
The new cycle and footpath - like the existing cycle path that will remain available - will form a complete link between the provinces of North Holland and Friesland. It's possible to bike or walk a circuit between a number of junctions, alternating back and forth with views of the Wadden Sea or IJsselmeer.
