It shows how sufficient funds, good script, prime direction, and sophisticated selection of materials and cast can produce a distinctively Filipino film that is truly world class.
The Filipino film Himala (Miracle, dir. Ishmael Bernal, 1982) is set in a mar ginal barrio awash in folk religiosity and superstition. Desert-like, poor, and Desert-like, poor, and believed to be cursed, the veritable nowhereland craves for a miracle.
Throngs of peasant folk travel from afar to get their miracle on, and the once-filled church dwindles to a measly ten people. Is she real, or is it a hoax? For a suffering people short on hope in the faith they were given, and seeking it elsewhere, anywhere - does it even matter?
