HILARY OF POITIERS (pron. pwot-YAY; c. AD 310–c. 367) was a Christian Bishop in what is today the midwestern part of France. Hilary was an important opponent of Arianism in the West before the Constantinopolitan restatement of the Nicene Creed in 381.

Hilary of Poitiers (Latin: Hilarius Pictaviensis; c. 310 – c. 367) [2] was Bishop of Poitiers and a Doctor of the Church. He was sometimes referred to as the "Hammer of the Arians" (Malleus Arianorum) and the "Athanasius of the West". [3] His name comes from the Latin word for happy or cheerful.
In 361 Hilary re-entered Poitiers in triumph and resumed possession of his see. He was welcomed with the liveliest joy by his flock and his brothers in the episcopate, and was visited by Martin, his former disciple and subsequently Bishop of Tours.
