Herten (German pronunciation: [ˈhɛʁtn̩] ⓘ; Westphalian: Hiätten) is a town and a municipality in the district of Recklinghausen, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is situated in the industrial Ruhr Area , some 5 km (3.1 mi) west of Recklinghausen .
A recreational area, and an 18 hole golf course are found just outside the grounds. The other castle is the water castle Schloss Herten. Known as one of the most beautiful buildings in all of North Rhine-Westphalia, this brick castle sits on the city’s edge.
Herten Castle is located within an old English landscape garden and its first mentioning dates back to 1376. In 1962, the main castle building was declared a cultural heritage monument. Herten Castle complex consists of two parts.
While foundations of today's main castle building incorporate elements from the 14th-century building, the buildings visible today were built by Stecke and Nesselrode families in the 16th and 17th century. The main castle consists of four wings creating an inner courtyard.
