Apr 23, 2023 · Herschel Dwellingham, whose drumming provided the funky underpinnings for Weather Report’s third album, Sweetnighter, passed away on April 16. He was 77 years old. I got to know Herschel while researching my book Elegant People: A History of the Band Weather Report.
With his success at Berklee, Herschel was introduced to Hale Smith, Professor of Music at Harvard and Yale Universities, and Walter Piston, Dean of Music, Harvard University, both of whom personally furthered his education and training. While in Boston, Herschel and Alva formed their own record label, My Records.
Sep 22, 2023 · That, in a nutshell, is the artistic legacy of Herschel Dwellingham, whose lifelong passion for music and extraordinary instrumental, writing, arranging and producing skills established him as a multitalented musical maverick throughout his 60-plus-year career.
Herschel is presently CEO of Bogalusa Music Group LLC, Magic City Records and Tik Records, and is co-owner of Black Lace Productions with Marlena Holt (Molly Holt of The Rascals), all based in Bogalusa, Louisiana.
I recently interviewed Herschel Dwellingham, one of the drummers who performed on Weather Report’s third album, Sweetnighter. I’ll be updating that page soon, but in the meantime, here’s some background about Herschel himself.
Farewell Herschel Dwellingham who created the grooves on Weather Report's 'Sweetnighter' album including the wonderful Boogie Woogie Waltz. Herschell died on 17 April and there's an appreciation here:
