Apr 23, 2023 · Herschel Dwellingham, whose drumming provided the funky underpinnings for Weather Report’s third album, Sweetnighter, passed away on April 16. He was 77 years old. I got to know Herschel while researching my book Elegant People: A History of the Band Weather Report.
Sep 22, 2023 · After graduating from high school in 1963, Dwellingham enrolled at Berklee College of Music in Boston on a full scholarship, majoring in music theory and composition.
Herschel really transformed the soul scene in Boston by combining the southern sound he had gotten growing up in Bogalusa (about 70 miles north of New Orleans) with the formal training he received at Berklee.
Upon graduating from high school, Herschel moved to Boston to attend the Berklee School of Music. At Berklee, he came under the tutelage of legendary drummer and teacher Alan Dawson. Years later, Herschel said his drumming style was a combination of his Louisiana roots and the rudiments that Dawson taught.
Herschel Dwellingham started his professional career as a drummer, playing in Bogalusa with the Rhythm Aces, a group led by Henry Sims, and a group of older musicians, which included Robert Hodge, his high school bandleader, who taught him how to write and arrange music.
