Generations of German schoolchildren have grown up with the story of resistance fighters Sophie and Hans Scholl, the Munich siblings executed in 1943 for challenging the Nazi regime.
Sophie’s siblings, especially her oldest brother Hans, later to become a founding member of the Weiße Rose, also were members of non-Nazi groups of young people. These associations shared and propagated a love for nature, outdoor adventures, as well as the music, art and literature of German Romanticism.
Scholl was arrested in 1937–38 because of his membership in a forbidden Youth Movement organisation. Hans Scholl had joined the Deutsche Jungenschaft vom 1.11.1929 (d.j.1.11) in 1934, when he and other Hitler Youth members in Ulm considered membership in this group and the Hitler Youth to be compatible. Hans Scholl. 1937–1939. Born in Ingersheim on September 22, 1918, Hans Scholl was nearly fourteen when he moved to Ulm in 1932 and nearly fifteen when Hitler came to power. He joined the Hitler Youth in the fall of 1933 and rose to command a squad.
Hans Fritz Scholl was a German pacifist and the founder of the White Rose resistance movement that was active during the Nazi period. Originally from Baden-Württemberg, Scholl hailed from an affluent family. His father served as the mayor of Forchtenberg am Kocher.
