The main college site, situated on the outskirts of the village of Girton, about miles (4 kilometres) northwest of the university town, comprises 33 acres (13 hectares) of land. In a typical Victorian red-brick design, most was built by architect Alfred Waterhouse between 1872 and 1887.
Girton is a home from home… a link to the world of work, and a potentially life-changing experience. Today, there are almost 800 matriculated students, over one third of whom are graduates, together with a community of around 120 academic Fellows and around 135 operational staff.
Girton College has been a pioneering institution ever since its foundation as Britain’s first residential institution offering university-level education for women: a bold step towards women’s full and equal participation in British political, social and economic life.
Girton is a 10-minute bus/15-minute cycle from Cambridge’s centre. The relaxed atmosphere, tight-knit community, and distance gives students the unique feeling of ‘coming home’ after busy days of work and play.
About Girton College. Girton College has a 150-year pioneering history that is well worth reading about here. We have a large and diverse community of Postgraduates from over 60 countries. The gender balance is fairly even and we have an intake each year of approximately 200 new students and have another 140 or so continuing students.

Girton College, Cambridge. Girton College's first incarnation was in the form of the first resident University College for Women which opened at Hitchin in 1869. It was established by Emily Davies and Barbara Bodichon to provide higher education for women.
