If someone is “In the closet” then they have not told anyone about their identity. If they have “come out of the closet” then they have revealed their identity to the people around them. Saying that the girl is in the closet is saying that she is secretly LGBTQ+.
If one is trying to hide, then one chooses a location that might appear undisturbed from a quick glance of a room, for example. But in the more metaphorical sense, closets are places where something might be stored for multiple seasons, even years without being used or discovered, unlike a food pantry or cabinet.
