Aug 1, 2024 · 9 Min Read. A Pioneering Voyage to the Court of the Great Khan. John of Plano Carpini, also known as Giovanni da Pian del Carpine, was a Franciscan friar and one of the first Europeans to reach the court of the Great Khan, Güyük Khan, in the 13th century.
Giovanni is the first Westerner to give the modern names for those rivers. On the Volga stood the Ordu, or camp, of Batu, the famous conqueror of eastern Europe and supreme Mongol commander on the western frontiers of the empire. He was one of the most senior princes of the house of Genghis Khan.
