The rules. A game of Go starts with an empty board. Each player has an effectively unlimited supply of pieces (called stones), one taking the black stones, the other taking white. The main object of the game is to use your stones to form territories by surrounding vacant areas of the board.

- The Board & Pieces Use a standard 19x19 grid. There are 19 horizontal and vertical lines. You can use a board or make a grid yourself. Sometimes smaller boards are used.
- The Rules Alternate moves. Traditionally, black starts first. Stones can also be placed on the edge, where there is a T-intersection. Once a stone is placed, it cannot be moved (unless captured and removed).
- Playing a Game Find an opponent. Someone who is well-versed in the game will be a better teacher and example. You can look for a game either face-to-face or on an online go-server.

Basics. The board starts empty. The board can be any size of grid, usually 13x13, 9x9 or 19x19. One player has black pieces and the other has white. The pieces are usually called stones. Black goes first, and then the players take turns. To make a play, you simply put a stone down on the board.
