Oct 7, 2014 · Potterton attended Hammersmith Art School, and eventually found work as an assistant animator with a man who painted backgrounds on animation features. Potterton recounts how he saw The Romance of Transportation in Canada— a 1952 short animation by Colin Low —in Picadilly Circus.

Gerald Potterton trained at the Hammersmith School of Art in London and served in the Royal Air Force. Upon release from the service, he worked for 2 years with a British company on the animated adaptation of George Orwell's Animal Farm (1954).
One of the famed “Great Brits” (Derek Lamb being the other) who emigrated to Canada from England to join the National Film Board, Potterton arrived in the mid-fifties and was at the forefront of the animation wave that gave the NFB new prominence.
