George Raymond Martin (he adopted the confirmation name Richard at 13 years old) [2] was born on September 20, 1948, [14] in Bayonne, New Jersey, [15] the son of longshoreman Raymond Collins Martin and Margaret Brady Martin.
He began writing very young, selling monster stories to other neighborhood children for pennies, dramatic readings included. Later he became a comic book fan and collector in high school, and began to write fiction for comic fanzines (amateur fan magazines).
