Apr 4, 2022 · Last updated on 4 April 2022. Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris, has today opened the new Atlantic Technological University (TU). Atlantic TU sees the dissolution of Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology, Institute of Technology Sligo, and Letterkenny Institute of Technology.
In 1998, the Regional Technical College Galway (RTC), was legally designated an Institute of Technology and renamed the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT). The Institutes of Technology Act 2006 inter alia, brought the Institutes under the aegis of the Higher Education Authority (up until then they were under the Department of Education), similar to Ireland’s university sector.

In April 2022, it was formally dissolved, and its functions were transferred to Atlantic Technological University (ATU). [1]
