As of 1.7.2, Mojang implemented a feature into mine craft that would forever change the way mapmakers view blocks, /setblock. The setblock command essentially allows a command block (or player) to remotely place blocks into the world. Here's the syntax: /setblock x y z <BlockID> data-method dataTag.
In Bedrock, you'd need to have an area with an all-black top block (as viewed from the sky), and open a level 0 map which contains all and only its coordinates. Once done, you can 'snapshot' the map with a pane of glass and a cartographer's table.
Command blocks and functions can be used, among many other things, to change the difficulty, change the state of the weather, or give a player predesignated items. They are particularly useful for the /weather and /time set commands, as they are only available in cheat mode otherwise.
