Feb 14, 2017 · Fences is a 1983 play by American playwright August Wilson. Set in the 1950s, it is the sixth in Wilson's ten-part "Pittsburgh Cycle". Like all of the "Pittsburgh" plays, Fences explores the evolving African-American experience and examines race relations, among other themes.
At the rear, there’s a derelict wooden house with boarded windows. The remnants of a fence are strewn between the wild lot behind the abandoned house and the Maxsons’ yard. Materials for a new fence . . . a couple of wooden sawhorses waiting for the lumber stacked under a tarp.
