This paper addresses this issue through a threefold working hypothesis: Is there anything going on in translation theory? Are recent translation theories significantly different form that of E.A. Nida? Can Bible translation in Africa contribute anything to translation study? These questions will be dealt with in the second part of this paper.

Bible translations are an old genre of texts and there are dozens of translations. In such a situation function specialisation inevitably takes place. There is the usual denominational specialisation (for example, Roman Catholic vs Protestant translations) having to do with the history of the churches.
In what follows, I intend to briefly overview the most significant issues and decisions translators make when producing English versions of the Bible. We’ll begin with the original source documents for the Old and New Testaments to gain an appreciation for the starting place of translation work.
