Joe Dante on. Fail Safe. Released 1964. Distributor Columbia. Lumet’s minimalist adaptation of the doomsday best seller is one of the director’s most unappreciated works, overshadowed then and now by the comically apocalyptic Dr. Strangelove.
Directed by Sidney Lumet and starring Henry Fonda and Walter Matthau, Fail Safe is a brilliant, if melodramatic, visualization of the horrendous decisions faced by military powers. While some have called it a spiritual prequel to Dr. Strangelove, there is no comedic undertone.
