Barlach’s drawings and sculptures of Russian beggar women are some of his most famous works, exploring the material and spiritual needs of human beings. His characters are solid, reduced into their essential geometric forms, their eyes are often closed or half-closed.
May 14, 2020 · The Ernst Barlach Haus Hamburg holds the most substantial collection of Barlach’s wood sculptures in the world. To mark this year’s anniversary it commissioned the photographer Andreas Weiss to take images of most of the existing wood sculptures starting with the holdings of the Barlach Haus.
Today, Ernst Barlach is known as one of the most important sculptors of Classical Modernism. Excellent examples of his expressionist wood and bronze sculptures can now be seen at the Güstrow Cathedral, the Elisabeth Church in Marburg and the Berlin National Gallery.
