The two hundred pages allotted to the 19 th and 20 th centuries are too few to do justice to the themes of warfare and empire. Anderson and Cayton’s account of the Spanish-American War of 1898 and its aftermath, however, bears an uncanny resemblance to today’s headlines.
Foner's most important books have transformed the way we see — and the way we teach — the origins of the Civil War, the significance of slave emancipation, and the politics of postwar Reconstruction. Foner grew up in a New York family equally devoted to historical scholarship and left-wing politics.
