Eric Foner (/ ˈfoʊnər /; born February 7, 1943) is an American historian. He writes extensively on American political history, the history of freedom, the early history of the Republican Party, African American biography, the American Civil War, Reconstruction, and historiography, and has been a member of the faculty at the Columbia ...
Dec 1, 2000 · Eric Foner’s career as a historian, poised at midstream, has already achieved the kind of greatness that eludes many over a lifetime. He is the author of 14 books, over 100 articles and essays, and numerous reviews, and is the editor of innumerable volumes.
E ric Foner, DeWitt Clinton Professor Emeritus of History at Columbia University, is one of this country's most prominent historians. He received his doctoral degree at Columbia under the supervision of Richard Hofstadter.
Professor Foner specializes in the Civil War and Reconstruction, slavery, and 19th-century America. He has written and edited nineteen books about American history, including The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery, which won the Pulitzer, Bancroft, and Lincoln prizes in 2011.
