Ephrem the Syrian[a] (/ ˈiːfrəm, ˈɛfrəm /; c. 306 – 373), also known as Saint Ephrem, Saint Ephraim (/ ˈiːfriəm /), Ephrem of Edessa or Aprem of Nisibis, was a prominent Christian theologian and writer who is revered as one of the most notable hymnographers of Eastern Christianity.
Though Ephrem’s biographical sources insist to portray him as an anchorite living in a cave on top of the hills surrounding the city, Ephrem lived as an ascetic and a tireless and energetic teacher and defender of the sound Christian doctrine, a liturgical composer, a poet-theologian, deeply involved in the life of his Church.
