Ephrem the Syrian[a] (/ ˈiːfrəm, ˈɛfrəm /; c. 306 – 373), also known as Saint Ephrem, Saint Ephraim (/ ˈiːfriəm /), Ephrem of Edessa or Aprem of Nisibis, was a prominent Christian theologian and writer who is revered as one of the most notable hymnographers of Eastern Christianity.
The existing Syrian works of Ephraem consist of commentaries on the Pentateuch and most of the historical and prophetical books of the Old Testament. According to Ebed Jesu (Assemani, Bibl. Orient., III. 1, p. 62), he also wrote a commentary on the Psalms.
