Unlike Jamaica, which still had forests, most of the land in Barbados had been cultivated to produce as much sugar as possible. On Sunday 14 April 1816 a major rebellion broke out in Barbados. This rebellion was carefully planned and organised by the senior enslaved men and women who worked on several estates and plantations.
Eventually, in 1807, Parliament passed an Act for the Abolition of the Slave Trade, which abolished the trade by Britain in enslaved peoples between Africa, the West Indies and America. The pro-slavery campaigners had argued that with no new enslaved Africans being traded slave-owners would treat their existing slaves better.
Some 400 enslaved men and women, led by a ranger called Bussa, and including men of the all-Black West Indian Regiment, revolt against the ruling elite on Barbados. 50 enslaved people died in the three day uprising, with 70 more summarily executed in the field.
