Aug 17, 2023 · This past fall, I spoke remotely with Austrian/German directors Elsa Kremser and Levin Peter about their work on the beautifully elliptical documentary Space Dogs (which I also reviewed). The movie tells two stories in parallel, that of the Soviet space program in its early days and of the life of street dogs in Moscow today.

But the filmmakers also take moments to look down — at the descendants of wolves running amok through the streets of Moscow, their howls reaching back up towards the narratives projected through to the sky.
SPACE DOGS. With an elliptical structure that shows us fascinating images from space, Space Dogs – directed by Elsa Kremser and Levin Peter and premiered at the Viennale 2019 – takes us to the nocturnal streets of Moscow, where we begin to follow the everyday life of two stray dogs during a real fight for survival, as a result of which the strongest one is the one who stays alive.
