Jun 14, 2024 · Leonard ends Elmore Leonard’s 10 Rules for Writing with a single rule that sums up all the others: If it sounds like writing, rewrite it. This is pretty sound advice for when you’re editing. You want your prose to be immersive. If it reads like writing, it won’t be.
Perhaps you'll find some clues in his 10 rules for good writing: Never open a book with weather. Avoid prologues. Never use a verb other than "said" to carry dialogue. Never use an adverb to modify the verb "said"...he admonished gravely. Keep your exclamation points under control.
- Never open a book with weather.
- Avoid prologues: they can be annoying, especially a prologue following an introduction that comes after a foreword…A prologue in a novel is backstory, and you can drop it in anywhere you want.
- Never use a verb other than “said” to carry dialogue.
- Never use an adverb to modify the verb “said” . . . he admonished gravely.
- Elmore Leonard. For aspiring writers and lovers of the written word, this concise guide breaks down the writing process with simplicity and clarity. From adjectives and exclamation points to dialect and what he calls 'hooptedoodle', Elmore Leonard explains what to avoid, what to aspire to, and what to do when it sounds like "writing" (rewrite).
