To address this knowledge gap, we investigated whether different measures of state-level legislation pertaining to access to reproductive care, including abortion, were associated with suicide rates of women from 1974 to 2016.
When compared with women without an abortion history, women with a prior abortion experienced a 61% increased risk of mood disorders. Abortion was further linked with a 61% increased risk of social phobia, and increased the risk of suicide ideation by 59%.
