Built in 1880-1888, this Renaissance Revival-style building was designed by Edwin May and Adolf Scherer to serve as the State Capitol Building, or Statehouse, of Indiana. The building replaced an earlier and much smaller structure on the same site, which stood from 1835 until 1877, when it was condemned due to structural problems.

Born in Boston in 1823, he moved with his carpenter father first to Madison, Indiana, and then to Indianapolis in 1842 at the age of 18.
