He first took a position in the city as a draftsman to Edwin May, one of Indianapolis’ leading architects. May, who was commissioned to design the new state capitol, died in 1880 before the plan was completed.

The building replaced an earlier and much smaller structure on the same site, which stood from 1835 until 1877, when it was condemned due to structural problems.

Edwin May died in February of that year, and Adolph Scherer supervised the project for the entire construction period. The interior was modeled in the Italian Renaissance style. Wherever possible, materials native to Indiana were used.
