Box office. $792.9 million [3][5] E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (or simply E.T.) is a 1982 American science fiction film produced and directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Melissa Mathison. It tells the story of Elliott, a boy who befriends an extraterrestrial, dubbed E.T., who is left behind on Earth.
- Drew Barrymore as Gertie. Only 7 years old at the time of filming, E.T. catapulted a young Barrymore — a.k.a. Gertie — to superstardom. Following the release, Barrymore began a fruitful career in Hollywood, starting with 1984's Firestarter.
- Henry Thomas as Elliott. Thomas was just 10 years old when he took on the lead role of Elliott, for which he earned a Golden Globe nomination. E.T. was his third film.

An alien is left behind on Earth and saved by the 10-year-old Elliot who decides to keep him hidden in his home.
