Douglas became bishop of Dunkeld and the queen’s chief adviser and involved himself in a series of intrigues to advance her cause and the power of his family, which led ultimately to his downfall. In 1521 he was forced by political enemies to flee to England, where he remained in exile until his death in London from the plague.

He first appears on record in 1478 as the rector of the church of Tyningham, and is called a clerk of the diocese of Brechin. [1] In 1482, he was selected to be Chancellor of the diocese of Aberdeen.
