Sometimes, a story is less about whether someone is guilty or innocent than it is about the pressures and perceptions surrounding and following an ambiguous action. The local police chief, Laurent (Jérémie Renier), seems to have his life on track.
Cue a weepy melodrama which literally drifts away on itself (“The ocean will console your father,” a confused Poulette is told when Laurent absconds to the sea) and a rather cornball and convenient bit of magical realism for the salvation of Laurent’s soul.
