Finding a spot where enemies can't reach you and attacking from there is a good plan. Ladders and ropes are also a good safe spot. Item balance is way different, though without scrappers and printers you don't have too much build control. While RoR2 just piles on the DPS items, RoR is balanced more for survival.
Always keep on the move because any time you stand still is when all the enemies attacks can stack up and hit you all at the same time. Most of the time more offense is the best solution. You want to kill things before they kill you and have decent speed that you don't get hit in the first place.

Won't make you immortal, but will get you out of danger a lot. Clicking the teleporter when you find it and then moving through the stage for pick-ups is a good way to go. You'll get money from the increased spawns and the Teleporter will then be indicated on your screen for an easy run back.
