Dorsoduro means "hard back." This area is a little firmer underfoot than the rest of Venice. The guesthouse where I stayed was in Dorsoduro, just a little way from the Ca' Rezzonico vaporetto stop. Dorsoduro's away from the madness of St. Mark's Square and therefore quieter, but with good restaurants, churches and museums.
