May 3, 2024 · Movies on Netflix can be an amazing tool for improving your conversational English. Not only do they allow you to hear the language in a real context, but they also expose you to different accents and slang.
In this paper, I explore accents as "unit [s] of cultural transmission" aka "memes" (Dawkins, 1976, p. 206), and the specific sets of connotations associated with accents, i.e., "dialectal memes", that are evoked in the original and dubbed versions of the aforementioned series.
