  4. In episode 1 of season 3, when the power goes out, it's the Russian machine turning on and opening the gate. With the gate opened, the small part of the mindflayer is able to be reanimated. The opening is too small for the mindflayer to send in a new army of demodogs/other upside down creatures, so it uses what it has to try and take down Eleven.
