I'm pretty early in season 2 (episode 3). I forgot why Kaidu was banished by Kublai (saw it in the s1 recap). Why did Kublai do that? Because it seems whatever the reason was is what pushed Kaidu to challenge Kublai.
The Khan no longer had a valid "reason" to execute Marco. Yusuf gave his life for Marco. This is because he believed Marco would be the ONE thing that could make the Khan victorious in battle. (he saw now other way to save Marco from certain death.) Yusuf was loyal to the Khan to the bitter end.
However, before the official votes were cast Kaidu decides to double down on his shittiness and threatens Kublai with....uhh....killing his son? or was it taking over the kingdom? unless Kublai resigned.
