Season 3 starts out poorly but gets a lot better as it goes. Seasons 4 and 5 are more far-fetched than early seasons, but are better than season 3. So yes, it does get better, at least until the final season, which people are more mixed on.

One thing that's dramatically different is the PACING. No more 24 episode seasons, they get shorter and more focused. If you liked the second half of season 3, you will likely enjoy the remainder of the show.
Season 3 as you say does have it's slow side, the first half is very up and down. But the second half. Like you say, some of the best episodes in the series are in that batch.
- Season 1 of LOST is still some of the best television I’ve seen. From “Walkabout” to “Numbers,” the first season of Lost has some real gems. The pilot is a master-class in gradually introducing the viewer to a very large cast of characters, hinting at some of their quirks just enough to be enticing.
- It’s less frustrating when you’re binging. There was something special about the experience of watching Lost live, something that I’m glad was such a huge part of my life between 2005 and 2010.
- The Ben/Widmore conflict is a mess. In season 4 episode 9, “The Shape Of Things To Come,” Ben Linus and Charles Widmore have a delightful exchange in which it’s revealed that the two have been rivals for a very long time.
- There are a LOT of plot holes. Although the creators of Lost had always maintained that they knew the answers to a lot of big questions, there are a few ongoing mysteries that, when looked at holistically, make no sense.
May 26, 2007 · The first series of Lost, infamously, ended with a pretty terrible lame duck double episode, which featured an hour or so of pondering simply to find a ladder. Series two? Much better.
