Instead of a traditional XP-based leveling system, your “level” is tied to your gear in this game. Your character’s power level is the average power level of all your equipped weapons and armor.
You can use enhancement cores purchased at the tower from Banshee the gunsmith to raise the light level of your gear. I do not recommend doing this every opportunity you get, but wait until you can raise the level up by 10, otherwise it's too expensive.
